2017 Workshop Schedule

Fleece Preparation and Carding - techniques for spinners and felters
August 12th, 10am to 1.30pm, £45
Find out how to turn raw fleece straight from the sheep (or gleaned from a fence) into clean, soft rolags, batts and rovings suitable for spinning, needle felting and wet felting. Discover what makes for a ‘good’ fleece and learn about the characteristics of different breeds along with what each one can bring to your work. I will offer step by step guidance on successfully washing your fleece without felting it! Participants will have the opportunity to practise their carding technique using a drum carder, hand carders or even small pet brushes for comparison. The workshop will cover carding techniques for opening up and aligning the fibre, blending different breeds (with a look at staple length and crimp) or different fibres together (adding, for example, silk or bamboo) and blending for colour mix. There will be plenty of time to work on technique to prepare rolags, batts and roving with a discussion on how each one can be used for spinning or felting. I will have a range of scoured, local fleece and British breed fibres available to experiment with.

Felting with Multi-Layer Resists
August 26th, 9.30am to 1.30pm, £50
Expand your 3D felting with this intriguing wet felting technique. Working with multi-layer resists allows you to create seamless complex shapes in one piece. Alternatively, it can be used to add pockets and layered depths to the surface of a simpler 3D piece, for example a vessel. This workshop is suitable for all skill levels but recommended for participants with some felting experience.

Felt Fairies and Angels
September 9th, 10am to 1.30pm, £45
Discover how to turn soft and colourful Merino fibre and humble pipe cleaners into beautiful fairies or angels using a felting needle, with a little added sparkle! Enjoy crafting indvidual hair styles, outfits, hats and flower posies for your creation.

Felt Painting - two part workshop
Discover how to 'paint' with loose wool fibre to create felt pictures. You are welcome to bring along an original photograph, sketch or design to inspire your felt painting. However, if you don't have anything to hand you will find plenty of inspiration around the studio.

Felt Painting, Part I - Design and Wet Felting
September 23rd, 10am to 1.30pm, £45
In the first of this two part workshop, you will create the basis of your felted picture using wet felting techniques. I can help to guide you on translating your image into a design for felting paying particular attention to how you can bring colour and texture to your picture. We will then explore a range of embellishment materials with samples to demonstrate the effect they will give to your finished picture.I will cover the wet felting and fulling techniques you can use, with emphasis on how you can manipulate each stage of the process to achieve the effect you wish, with samples to illustrate each step. We will then move on to a demonstration of carding technique, focussing on blending colours before you get your hands on the fibre and start your layout for wet felting.

Felt Painting, Part II - Needle Felting and Stitch
September 30th, 10am to 1.30pm, £45
In the second part of this workshop we will explore techniques to embellish your wet felted piece.Using needle felting and stitch to add additional colour and texture, this is when your picture will really come to life. I can help you assess your piece to choose areas to embellish and accentuate and decide on the details you may wish to add. We will then explore a range of embellishment materials with samples to demonstrate the effect they will give to your finished picture. I will then cover the needle felting and stitch techniques you can use, with samples to illustrate each step before you get your hands on the fibre and threads to begin embellishing.

Introduction to Needle Felted Sculptures
October 14th, 10am to 1.30pm, £45
During this workshop we will look at how to create needle felted sculptures with real character. We will cover the use of core wool, armatures (wire and pipe cleaners), achieving a smooth finish, achieving a furry or hairy finish and the effect that using wool from different breeds will have on your finished piece. We will cover the different sizes and gauges of needles and the projects that each needle is best suited to. There is plenty of time to ask questions and explore adapting techniques to your preferred way of working.

Included in the workshop price: full tuition, all materials and equipment, as much tea and coffee as you can drink plus some rather lovely home baking and fruit. Please let me know if you have any dietary requirements when booking.
